HOARDING DISORDER HELP

Key features of hoarding disorder

Hoarding Disorder is a mental health condition where someone has ongoing difficulty letting go of possessions, no matter their actual value.  Over time, this leads to extreme clutter that can affect safety, daily life, and relationships.

  • Collecting and keeping far more items than needed.

  • Struggling to throw things away, even if they’re broken or worthless.

  • Strong feelings of stress or anxiety when facing the idea of discarding items.

  • Living spaces becoming so cluttered they can’t be used as intended.

  • The clutter causing problems such as family conflict, relationship or social and work activities, health hazards, or isolation.

What's the definition of hoarding?

(Frost & Hartl, 1995)

1.  The acquisition of and the failure to discard a large number of possessions that seem to be useless or of limited value.

2. Living spaces sufficiently cluttered so as to preclude activities for which those spaces were designed.

3. Significant distress or impairment in functioning caused by the hoarding.
